No internet needed. If there is no Wi-Fi, the host's phone creates its own network and everyone joins that.

No. There is no sign-up, no email and no password. You choose a display name so people can recognise you in the room, and that name never leaves your phone except to show the others in the same session.
No. The host's phone serves the file directly to the members who joined that room, over the local network. It never touches the internet or any server we run.
No. Joining requires scanning the host's QR code, which carries a one-time secret for that session. A device that did not scan it is refused by the room and cannot read the video.
The QR carries the room's secret and, when it is needed, the hotspot's password. A short typed code could not carry either safely, so scanning is both quicker and better protected.
Up to 24 including the host when everyone is on the same Wi-Fi. On the host's own hotspot the phone's Wi-Fi chip allows around 10 devices, whatever the app permits. In practice, bandwidth is usually what limits a big room first: every member streams the video from the host's phone, so a high-bitrate film runs out of room sooner than a small one.
Android 8.0 and newer. Joining a host's hotspot is most reliable on Android 10 and above, where the system provides better ways for an app to connect to a specific network.
